Shaping Servants for God’s Kingdom Between the Classroom and the Field
Field Education at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary is an essential component of theological preparation. It is not an additional program outside the curriculum, but an extension and fulfillment of theological education, enabling students to transform the biblical knowledge, theological insights, and pastoral wisdom gained in the classroom into practical ministry skills within real church and ministry settings.
We believe that the true meaning of theology extends beyond intellectual understanding and must be embodied in a life of faithful witness and the pastoral care of God’s people. Therefore, Field Education is centered on integration: integrating knowledge with experience, scholarship with spiritual formation, and personal calling with the mission of the church. In this way, students are equipped with a solid foundation for ministry and a mature pastoral heart before entering full-time ministry.
Vision and Mission of Field Education
The fundamental purpose of Field Education is to help students gradually become faithful, discerning, gifted, and responsive servants of God’s Kingdom through a process of “learning by doing and doing by learning.” Through direct participation in ministry at churches or Christian organizations, students are able to:
- Discern Their Calling: Gain clarity about God’s calling through real ministry experiences and discern their direction in pastoral ministry, missions, teaching, counseling, family ministry, cross-cultural ministry, and other areas of service.
- Integrate Learning: Connect theological, biblical, pastoral, and missiological knowledge from the classroom with the real-life needs of congregations, learning how to embody truth in ministry.
- Discover Gifts and Limitations: Recognize their God-given gifts and areas for growth through team ministry, developing a deeper and more honest understanding of both God and themselves.
- Develop a Pastor’s Heart: Gain comprehensive experience in pastoral ministry through worship leadership, preaching and teaching, visitation and care, discipleship, administration, conflict resolution, and pastoral crisis management.
- Establish a Foundation for Ministry: Under the guidance of spiritual mentors and experienced pastors, develop healthy ministry rhythms, spiritual disciplines, and the ability to serve effectively in partnership with fellow ministers.
Field Education Formats and Curriculum Structure
- Master of Divinity (M.Div.): Requires Practicum Education I and II (FES501/FES502), complemented by the first-year summer Cross-Cultural Short-Term Mission Practicum (FES521) and the second-year, two-month Church Practicum (FES529), forming a comprehensive pathway for ministry preparation.
- Master of Arts in Christian Studies, Master of Arts in Family Ministry, and Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies (M.A.C.S./M.A.F.M./M.A.I.C.S.): Requires the Cross-Cultural Short-Term Mission Practicum (FES521) and offers elective practicum courses to guide students in gaining practical ministry experience within their respective areas of study.
- Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.): Offers elective Individual Practicum Supervision (FES80x) to help students engage with pastoral contexts in North America and deepen their reflection, renewal, and development in ministry.
Supervisory Relationships: Mentoring and the Formation of Ministry Leaders
- On-Site Supervisor: An experienced pastor or ministry leader appointed by the church or organization who provides ministry modeling, feedback, and guidance in the field.
- Field Education Director: A faculty member of the Seminary who oversees the overall planning and evaluation of Field Education, provides spiritual accompaniment, and helps students integrate their learning through reflection.
- Peer Reflection: Through sharing and discussion among interns, students develop relationships of mutual support and encouragement, growing together as ministry partners.
