LOGOS Evangelical Seminary established the Compelling Preaching Center (CPC) to help Chinese preachers strengthen their preaching and effectively minister to people living in a postmodern cultural context. Through biblical truth, the Center seeks to touch hearts, renew lives, and equip believers to live as faithful disciples of Christ.

Program Highlights:

  • Content and Method: Integrating theological depth with effective preaching methods.
  • Postmodern Context: Addressing the spiritual needs of younger generations in today’s cultural context.
  • Peer Support: Fostering interaction, encouragement, and shared growth among fellow preachers.

Strategy 1

Research the needs and challenges faced by Chinese pastors in the United States and develop more compelling, contextually relevant preaching approaches, providing a stronger research and practical foundation for training programs and teaching methods.

Strategy 2

Provide continuing education for practicing pastors through certificate programs. In addition to studying the latest preaching methods, participants receive mentoring within their ministry contexts. Mentors regularly gather feedback from congregations and track participants’ progress and development. The results are compiled for research and program evaluation and reported to the Center.

Strategy 3

Establish preaching support groups based on the seminary’s Dream-12 Communities model of pastoral care. Composed of certificate program participants and led by trained mentors, these groups provide preaching guidance while fostering spiritual growth through mutual support and peer fellowship.

Advanced Preaching Certificate Program

Designed for professionally trained preachers who have completed theological education, this program helps participants deepen their preaching from the inside out, build on their seminary training, broaden their preaching methods, and connect preaching with church ministry.

  • Audience: Professionally trained preachers, including current ministers and LOGOS alumni.
  • Program: One-year certificate program with three terms per year; each term is eight weeks.
  • Courses: 2 prerequisite courses + 3 core courses + 1 elective
  • Credits: 2 credits per course
  • Format: All courses are offered online via Microsoft Teams.
  • Schedule: Tuesdays, 5:30–7:30 PM PST; approximately eight weeks per course

  • Practicum: Participants join a five-member peer group for one year, meeting monthly for mutual spiritual and preaching support. At least 10 sermons are evaluated with feedback from peers and coaches.

Lay Preaching Certificate Program

Designed for lay leaders who have not received formal theological training but are actively serving in preaching ministries, as well as emerging preachers recommended and mentored by their churches. The program provides a solid foundation in preaching principles and methods.

Instructors 

Rev. Ai-Kuang Chen

Rev. Ai-Kuang Chen earned a degree in Computer Science from the University of Houston. Following God’s call to ministry, he received his theological training at Dallas Theological Seminary, earning a Th.M., and later completed a Ph.D. at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He previously served as a pastor at a Chinese church in Carrollton, Texas.

Dr. Yi-Chen Peng

Dr. Yi-Chen Peng is from Taiwan. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine, an M.Div. from LOGOS Evangelical Seminary, and an Ed.D. from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. She has served in missions, pastoral ministry, and Christian organizations and currently teaches at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary.

Primary Teaching Areas: Higher Education and Teaching Methods, Introduction to Christian Education, Homiletics, Spiritual Formation

She is married and has two children.

Rev. Chi-Yang Wu

Rev. Chi-Yang Wu earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and worked for 14 years as an engineering manager at an engineering consulting firm. Following God’s call to ministry, he earned an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a D.Min. from Asbury Theological Seminary.
He served in pastoral ministry at a Chinese church in Cincinnati for more than 30 years and has also taught as an adjunct faculty member at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary, China Evangelical Seminary, and Universal Abundance Theological Seminary.
He and his wife have two sons and one daughter, and four grandchildren.

Rev. Yung-Chien Lin

Rev. Yung-Chien Lin was born in Hong Kong. After earning a degree in Computer Science from the University of Houston, he responded to God’s call and pursued theological studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he earned a Th.M. After graduating in 1982, he served at a Chinese church in Houston.
He earned a D.Min. in 1991 and was sent in 1997 to plant a church in Fort Bend, Texas. He founded Fort Bend Chinese Church with a vision to nurture spiritual growth and serve the Fort Bend community.
Rev. Lin married Ning-Hua Lu in 1981, and they have one son and one daughter.

Rev. Ke-Chiang Wang

Rev. Ke-Chiang Wang holds degrees in Law from Soochow University, Hospital Administration from Tulane University, and an M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary. His diverse academic and professional journey eventually led him into pastoral ministry.
He has served in pastoral ministry for nearly 20 years, including in Michigan and Seattle. Passionate about preaching, his D.Min. dissertation at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary explored “Unleashing the Dramatic Elements in Preaching.” He brings creativity, humor, and dynamic energy to the art of preaching, with a particular passion for reaching and engaging younger generations.

Rev. Chiu-Man Kung

Rev. Chiu-Man Kung is from Taiwan. From 2013 to 2022, God used his family to establish two Chinese churches and a gospel outreach in Michigan. He is currently engaged in church planting ministry in the Irvine area of Orange County, Southern California.
Rev. Kung is committed to building meaningful connections, encouragement, and collaboration among LOGOS alumni and seeks to become a faithful partner in the work of church planting and missions.

Rev. Kai Chang

Rev. Kai Chang founded River of Life Bread of Life Church in Vancouver in 2009 and has served as its senior pastor ever since. He brings extensive experience in pastoral leadership, church governance, and church planting.
Throughout his years of ministry, he has integrated pastoral counseling, inner healing, and spiritual formation to promote holistic spiritual and personal well-being. Together with his wife, he has also helped families experience restoration and renewed joy.
Rev. Chang currently serves as Assistant Professor of Practical Theology and Director of the D.Min. Program, Church Vitality Center, and Practicum Education at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary.

Rev. Ying Wang

Rev. Ying Wang is from Taiwan. She earned a B.A. in Land Economics from National Chengchi University and a master’s degree in Architecture from Tamkang University. She received her M.Div. from LOGOS Evangelical Seminary in 2010 and her Th.M. in 2022.
Her thesis, “Ordinary People, Extraordinary Questions: Elihu’s Theology of Mass Violence in Job 32–37,” explores the theological implications of suffering and mass violence through the speeches of Elihu.
Rev. Wang has served at Aimu Taiwan Evangelical Church since 2010. Known for her authenticity and creativity, she is passionate about applying biblical truth to contemporary contexts. She is married and has one son.

Rev. Daode Chen

Rev. Daode Chen is from Wenzhou, China, and is a third-generation Christian who grew up in the church and actively served from a young age. He later pursued theological education at Singapore Bible College. After earning his M.Div., he returned to Wenzhou, where he served in publishing and youth ministry and promoted expository preaching training in various regions.
His D.Min. dissertation at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary focuses on the application of preaching. He currently pastors a Mandarin congregation at a Chinese Baptist church in California and, together with his wife, is raising three children.

Rev. Guangxin Lin

Rev. Guangxin Lin graduated from Wuhan University with a degree in Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering and spent many years operating a water treatment engineering company. In 2006, he responded to God’s call and came to the United States to pursue an M.Div. at International Theological Seminary.
From 2009 to 2020, he served at International Great Commission Church in Los Angeles as Administrative Director and Director of the Equipping Center. In September 2020, he planted International Dynamic Gospel Church and currently serves as its Senior Pastor.
Rev. Lin is pursuing a D.Min. at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary. His dissertation focuses on “Discipleship among Postmodern Young Adults in Chinese Churches in North America.”

Dr. Chin-Ling Tsai

Dr. Chin-Ling Tsai is from Taiwan and earned a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. She has served as an Old Testament faculty member at Chinese Bible Seminary in Taipei, China Evangelical Seminary in North America, and China Evangelical Seminary of America, as well as in church education ministry.
Dr. Tsai currently serves as an adjunct professor at Dallas Theological Seminary and teaches at several theological institutions. Her publications include The Tien Dao Bible Commentary: Esther and Zechariah.

Rev. / Teaching Assistant Kuei Chou

Rev. Kuei Chou came to faith during college and, in 2008, responded to God’s call to full-time ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ. He has led teams in both campus and workplace ministries, advancing the gospel and equipping workers for God’s kingdom.
In 2013, he planted a church and served in pastoral and missions ministry, while also teaching at a theological institution. He received theological training at Dallas Theological Seminary and Singapore Bible College and is currently pursuing a D.Min. at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary.
He and his wife have three sons and one daughter.

Director of Compelling Preaching Center

Rev. Chiu-Man Kung was born in Taiwan and majored in Journalism, working as an editor and reporter at a newspaper before entering ministry. She came to faith in 1986 and, with the affirmation and encouragement of her husband, clearly discerned her call to full-time ministry in 2007. That same year, she entered LOGOS Evangelical Seminary to pursue an M.Div.

After graduating in 2012, Rev. Kung was called to serve at her home church, FECC, and participated in its first church-planting initiative. From 2013 to 2022, responding to God’s call and her church’s sending, she and her family moved to Michigan to plant churches in the American Midwest. By God’s grace, they established two Chinese churches and a gospel outreach center.

In 2023, Rev. Kung and her family were called once again to pursue church planting and missions. They are currently serving in the Irvine area of Orange County, Southern California. She is passionate about building connections, encouragement, and collaboration among LOGOS alumni and partnering with fellow workers in church planting and missions.

As Director of the Compelling Preaching Center, Rev. Kung is committed to encouraging and equipping LOGOS alumni in their preaching ministries. Since 2024, she has actively participated in the Compelling Preaching training series offered by her alma mater, with a vision to provide alumni preachers with ongoing professional development after graduation—sharpening their skills, deepening their ministry, and equipping them to effectively shepherd churches and plant new congregations.

Rev. Kung is currently pursuing a D.Min. at LOGOS Evangelical Seminary. She and her husband have two adult daughters, and their entire family has faithfully participated in church planting and second-generation ministry over the past decade.

This course taught me how to build cultural and theological bridges and clearly identify the central theme of a sermon. Through Rev. Ai-Kuang Chen’s teaching, I became more aware of my blind spots in sermon preparation and gained a clearer understanding of the “one bullet” concept in preaching. The online preaching exercises allowed us to learn from one another, share encouragement, and recognize areas for growth. Pastor Maria’s care and the mutual prayers among classmates also made this a joyful experience of being nourished both in truth and in the Spirit.

Through training in dramatic expression and imagination, I learned to vary vocal volume, pitch, and pace rather than simply explain the text. Using vocal effects and personification can help listeners grasp the biblical story and engage more deeply with its message.

This course highlighted the often-overlooked visual and dramatic elements of preaching. Facial expressions, gestures, and the use of stage space can strengthen communication and help convey the emotions of biblical characters. I learned that dramatic elements can effectively engage the congregation and, when used appropriately alongside visual presentations, keep the focus on the preacher and the message.

Traditional preaching courses often emphasize exegesis but give less attention to communication. It is like teaching a chef how to select ingredients without teaching how to cook. Dramatic elements can serve as seasoning that makes preaching more engaging. Along with sound exegesis, accurate theology, and effective illustrations, they can help make preaching more compelling.
